St. John’s Lutheran Church Restoration / Renovation

A comprehensive restoration and renovation design of the St. John’s Lutheran Church in the City of Orange, California; which is dedicated to historical preservation and was governed by a historic preservation ordinance overlay.
The Church was dedicated in 1914 to the congregation of a small and growing farming community which, over time, has turned into the hustle and bustle of Southern California with a small town charm. The critical goal was to give back to those whom helped preserve the existing sanctuary over the years, and to allow those in the future to remember the past, which had been preserved for them. The building committee’s goal was to enter and leave the facility as completed in 1914. This was achieved by maintaining the existing historic elements and providing contemporary interventions to re-interpret and complement, but not take away from, the original fabric. The project preserves the essential character of the landmark sanctuary and creates a vibrantly, beautifully restored and dramatically enhanced edifice will all of the modern conveniences and amenities that contemporary worshipers expect, but one that is still beloved by generations.
